A New Town Manager for East Hampton?

Town council decides on who to offer job to.

A search that began with a public forum on Jan. 19 has hopefully come to an end for the East Hampton Town Council and residents of the town.

The council met in executive session on Monday, and before the night was over had decided on which candidate to offer the position of town manager to. The vote was 4-3.

The hire is contingent on the candidate passing a physical and arriving at a mutually agreeable contract with the town. A background investigation has already been completed. The candidate is not being identified pending acceptance of the job offer.

East Hampton has been without a permanent town manager since September of 2010, when Jeffrey O'Keefe resigned during his attempted removal of Police Chief Matt Reimondo and the elimination of the police chief position altogether. Since that time, the town has had three people step in to fill the void, most recently John Weichsel.

Weichsel, the former Southington Town manager for 44 years, is serving his final day on the job on Tuesday. Finance Director Jeff Jylkka will take over until the new town manager is in place.

The council, with the assistance of consultant, Lorraine Baltimore, initially had 30 applicants to consider, reducing that number to nine before conducting interviews.
