Portland Parks & Recreation Programs

News for the week of April 11

To register or to obtain additional information for any Parks & Recreation programs, please call 860-342-6757, or you may go online to www.portlandct.org, click on Departments, then to Parks & Recreation.  The individual registration forms will be listed as a link on the web page.  Forms can be printed, completed and returned back to the Parks & Recreation office.    Registration Forms must be completed for each program prior to the program start date.  The Parks & Recreation Hotline is 860-262-7234.  This number is for closures and cancellations or updates.

The Parks & Recreation Summer Playground Information and Summer Sport Camps are now available on line at www.portlandct.org

Chris Corkum’s Baseball Mini Camp for April Vacation

The program will consist of a series of drills and instructional games which will serve to educate, train, and create a feeling of enjoyment one can derive from participating in baseball!  Throwing, fielding, hitting and team play are the major areas of concentration.  It’s a great way to get ready for your season!  The program will be held Monday & Tuesday, April 18 and 19, from 1 to 4 p.m. at Valley View School fields.  It is open to ages 7 to 12.  The fee is $65.

American Red Cross “Babysitting” Class

This program provides youth ages 11 to 15 with the knowledge and skills necessary to safely and responsibly give care for children and infants.  This training will help students to develop leadership skills, learn diapering, bedtime, keeping children safe and behavior under control along with learning basic child care and first aid.  Class will be held at the Parks & Recreation Office on Monday and Tuesday, April 18 and 19 from 5:45 to 8:45 p.m.

The fee is $55.

Ladies Spring Golf Clinic

Have you always wanted to learn how to play golf or just brush up on your skills?  Parks & Recreation in cooperation with Portland West is offering a ladies golf clinic.  Golf Professional Gerry D’Amora from Portland West will be the instructor of this 5-week session.  The Clinic will be held Tuesdays, April 26 to May 24 from 6 to 7 p.m. at Portland West.  The fee is $110.

American Red Cross “When I’m In Charge”

When I’m In Charge is designed for youth ages 7 and up.  The program gives youth increased confidence and the ability to feel safe and in control when home alone by teaching them to act safely, think responsibly, and be independent decision makers.  Topics include:  answering the door and telephone, internet safety, gun safety & who to call in an emergency.  Class is held Thursday, April 28, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Parks & Recreation Office.  The fee is $30.

Baseball Trips

The Parks & Recreation Office is offering the following baseball trips through Dattco bus Company to Yankee Stadium and Fenway Park.  Departure from Portland will be at the Brownstone Intermediate School, 314 Main St., and the bus will depart ½ hour after the game ends.

Yankees vs. Mets, Sunday, May 22, at Yankee Stadium.  Tickets are Section 233/234B for a 1:05 p.m. game.  The cost is $140.  Depart  at 8:30 a.m.

Red Sox vs. Baltimore, Sunday, July 10, at Fenway Park.  Tickets are Section Right Field Grandstand, Section 7 for a 1:35 p.m. game.  The cost is $96.  Depart  at 8:30 a.m.

Red Sox vs. Tampa Bay, Saturday, Sept. 17, at Fenway Park for a 7:10 p.m. game!

Tickets are Section Right Field Box 89, the cost is $111.  Depart at 2:15 p.m.

1st of all - LOWER income community's " certainly Is not referring to places such as PortlandRead More or East Hampton so I'm confused why the writer implies it does since clearly it doesn't ! the other comment the writer chooses to include is "society lets kids down" referring to not allocating enough $$$ for supplies or education ..... THIS is JUST CRAZY !!!! on a Larger Level the USA throws more $$ at education thinking it will make a difference when it will not - and the results show it... 2ndly - has anyone that agrees with this Assertion actually ever looked at the Budgets these school systems receive ? it's clear that the majority if our tax $ goes to educators and the system - and it's mainly comes down to a few simple things when we talk about why teachers are taking cash outta their own pockets to buy supplies. it has NOTHING to do with not having the $$ it comes down to - the educators and Dept Leads NOT planning correctly. if they had planned correctly and put it in their HUGE inflated budgets they wouldn't have to go buy things .... Also it cones down to the administrators not working with the boards to put a system in place that if for some reason - something is needed - they have an Avenue To obtain it or get reimbursed for it Easily. So we really need To put a stop to continuing to put a slant on these types of stories - and just start stating the facts. the last thing I find VERY strange is that Nowhere the PTA is mentioned and What a great resource they are !!! The majority of the time these groups have plenty of $$$ ON HAND that they actually need to "" THINK of "" year after year what to do with it all...... they are great groups that really add to the overall assistance to the depts within the schools. last year alone for an example is that our PTO purchased over 1200 dollars in tee shirts for the 1st graders to wear at an Assembly as well as Utilizing their funds to purchase a $800 Color laser printer. So let's all take a step back and Realize Yes maybe our teachers are out there purchasing supplies however It is not due to a lack of funds with in the school systems budgets
