LOCAL GOLF TOURNAMENT REACHES HALF MILLION MARK TO SUPPORT HOSPICE SERVICES

Back in 1987, a group of local businessmen decided to sponsor an annual golf tournament to raise money for the Middlesex Hospital Hospice program.

“The goal of the tournament was to raise money for cancer services,” said John Kelley, who is the original and current chairman of the committee. “Several committee members had experienced cancer themselves.”

About the same time as the first tournament, Middlesex Hospital had established its Hospice program and opened the inpatient Weiss Hospice Unit. Today, the Middlesex Hospital Hospice & Palliative Care Program offers end-of-life care and support for patients and their families, either at home or for short periods on the inpatient unit. The program staff and its volunteers provide patients and their families with care and comfort, as well as emotional and spiritual support.

Now, the 27-year tournament has reached a milestone. It has raised more than half a million dollars for the Hospice & Palliative Care program at Middlesex Hospital.

Kelley adds, “Back when the first tournament started, a committee member had suggested we raise money for the Hospice program and the tournament has been doing just that for all these years. We never imagined we would surpass the $500,000 mark!”

“I cannot express what an enormous impact the hard work and dedication of the committee and everyone involved in the tournament has had on the lives of our patients and their families,” said Melanie Cama, Hospice & Palliative Care Program Director. The Hospital is extremely grateful for the overhwhelming support they have provided for so many years.”

Next year’s Hospice golf tournament will take place on September 9, 2014 at the Portland Golf Course.
