Honor the 75th Anniversary of the Arrigoni Bridge With the Portland Historical society

The anniversary of the Middletown-Portland bridge is on Aug. 6.

The Portland Historical Society is hosting a special historical program commemorating the 75th anniversary of the dedication of the Arrigoni Bridge.

On Tuesday, Aug. 27, the society will host a program by Jonathan Ives, a structural engineer with URS in Rocky Hill. The program, “The Design and Construction of the Arrigoni Bridge,” will focus on the bridge’s design history, including alternative routes and bridge types that were considered before the ultimate design was selected.

The presentation will include photographs and actual video footage taken during its original construction in 1938. At the time of its completion, the Middletown-Portland bridge was the largest, most expensive bridge in the state, according to the society.
