Rainy Weekend Postpones Lantern Event in Portland

A local mother had a plan to launch 2,000 lanterns in honor of the families and victims of Newtown.

A plan Sunday to launch hundreds of sky lanterns over a fairgrounds in Portland has been postponed.

The Middletown Press reported Tuesday that the heavy rains that dropped four inches of water on the town over the weekend forced Berlin mother Alysiah Robinson to cancel the “Light the Sky With Light and Love" launch at the Exchange Club Fairgrounds.

Robinson, who has been coordinating the lantern launch in honor of the families and victims of the Newtown shooting at Sandy Hook School in November, told the newspaper the fairgrounds were flooded and it was not possible to hold the event.

Robinson reported on the event's Facebook page that the launch will be happening at a later date.
