East Haven Candlelight Vigil to Honor Newtown Shooting Victims

The leaders of St. Vincent de Paul and the Old Stone Church will hold a joint candlelight vigil Saturday in East Haven to honor the victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting.

East Haven's clergy community is banding together to hold a candlelight vigil Saturday evening to honor those who lost their lives during the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting Friday.

The Rev. Tom Sievel from St. Vincent de Paul Church and Pastor Karen Johnson of the Old Stone Congregational Church are organizing the East Haven vigil.

The vigil will be held in Margaret Tucker Park, which is the small park in front of Old Stone Church, at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Johnson told East Haven Patch Thursday afternoon that the event is still in the planning stages, and so other area clergy members may also be involved in the vigil.

She noted, however, that the ceremoney — which will be brief — has been organized to provide an opportunity for East Haven residents to come together and honor those who lost their lives during the tragic event.

East Haven Patch will continue to provide updates on the vigil, if and when additional information becomes available.

I attended this vigil along with 2 to 3 hundred others on Saturday evening. It was brief and consisted of a candle lighting a few readings led by local clergy and some singing. Everyone was somber and clearly upset over the Newtown tragedy hoping their attendance could do something for the victims or ease their own angst.. Mayor Joe spoke briefly and was unusually eloquent.
