Hazardous Waste Collection Day is This Saturday, Oct. 5

If you have old fluids or chemicals you want to dispose of, this is where you can do it. It's open to all Durham and Middlefield residents.

There will be a hazardous waste collection day happening this Saturday, Oct. 5, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Middletown.

Here are the details, courtesy of a posting on the Town of Durham's website.

When: Saturday, October 5th, 2013 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. 

Where: Middlesex Community College (large parking area) 
100 Training Hill Road, Middletown 

Who: Residents from the towns of Chester, Clinton, Cromwell, Deep River, Durham, East Hampton, Essex, Haddam, Killingworth, Lyme, Middlefield, Middletown, Old Lyme, Old Saybrook, Portland and Westbrook 

Common Household Hazardous Waste Suggested Items for Disposal 

Acids Gasoline & Diesel Polishes 
Adhesives, Glues, Pool Chemicals 
Aerosols (Full or Partial), Herbicides, Pesticides Rechargeable 
Alkaline batteries, Lithium Batteries, Rodent Poison 
Ammonia, Insecticides Solvents 
Antifreeze Kerosene, & #2 Fuel Oil Transmission Fluid 
Artist’s Paints, Lighter Fluid Turpentine 
Asbestos, Mercury, Weed Killer 
Brake Fluids, Mercury Switches, Wood & Metal Polishes 
Batteries, Mercury Thermometers, Wood Preservatives 
Cleaning Solvents, Mercury Thermostats, Wood Stains

*Consumer electronics can now be brought to each town’s transfer station or landfill.

Preparation of materials for transport and disposal 

* Dry material must be in closed containers such as plastic bags and labeled. 
* Do not mix materials. 
* All materials must be labeled. *Tighten all lids on containers. 
* Pack containers in sturdy boxes. 
* Transport material in automobile trunk, rear of station wagon, or truck 

Directions to Middlesex Community College (large parking area): From Route 9 north and south Take Exit 11 Turn right off exit ramp, Go straight at light onto Bartholomew Road, Take 1st right onto Reservoir Road. Take 1st right onto Training Hill Road No fee to participate.
