Portland Senior Center news for the week of March 26.

The Portland Senior Center, located at 7 Waverly Ave., is open for activities for area seniors Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.  New participants are always welcome. Blood Pressure Screening will now be provided by Middlesex Hospital Home Care on the first and third Wednesday.

Foot Care will again be available at the Senior Center on the first Thursday of each month. The fee is $30. Please call 860-342-6760 to schedule an appointment. A free hearing screening also is available by appointment only.

A new Beginner’s Computer class will be held at the Center starting Monday, April 2. The nine-week class is instructed by Stephanie Miller and Sal Pitruzello. The fee is $40. Please call the Center to register.

 

Community Café Menu:

The Community Café serves a hot nutritious lunch Monday, Thursday and Friday at noon. Please call to make a reservation at least 24 hours in advance. The cost is $2. 

The menu for the week of March 26 is:

Monday: Chicken Noodle Sup, Salisbury Steak w/Vegetable Gravy and Egg Noodles.                                           

Thursday: Chicken Oriental w/Orange Sauce over White Rice.

Friday: Pier 17 Fish and boiled potatoes.

 

Dinner on April 10

A dinner is planned at the Center on Tuesday, April 10, at 5 p.m. followed by an intergenerational spelling bee. We are looking for eight senior citizens interested in participating in the spelling bee along with eight Brownstone Intermediate School students ages 10 to 12 (six to participate and two alternates). The dinner is sponsored by Cobalt Lodge. Please call the Center to sign up.

 

Exercise

Light Aerobics: Monday and Friday, 9:30 a.m., and Wednesday, 9 a.m.

Flex & Tone: Tuesdays and Thursdays, 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. ($2.50 per class)

Line Dancing: Wednesdays, 10 a.m.

Tai Chi: Fridays, 1:30 p.m. ($40 for 10-week class. Register in advance.)

 

Games

Wii Bowling: Flexible times. Call for openings.

A pool table is available for use at various time, Call for openings!

Bingo: Monday at 1 p.m.

Scrabble: Tuesday at 1 p.m.

UNO/Rummikub/SkipBo: Tuesday, Thursday, Friday at 1:00

Bowling: Thursdays departing at 8:15 a.m.

 

Social Duplicate Bridge

Played the second and fourth Friday. The next session of Bridge is March 23. Please arrive at 12:45.

Fridays twice a month at 1 p.m.

  

Crafting

Sojourn Bears: Tuesday at 9:30 a.m.

Watercolor Classes: Wednesday, 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.  (you must pre-register for this class).

Knitter’s Nook: Thursday at 10 a.m.

 

Trips

Shopping in Cromwell

The senior van is scheduled for shopping trips to Cromwell on Friday, April 13 and April 27, departing the Center at 9:30 a.m. Please call the Center to sign up. The transportation fee is $3.

Mohegan Sun

Portland Senior Center is offering a bus trip to Mohegan Sun Casino on Wednesday, April 18, departing the Center at 9:30 a.m. You will receive a $30 gaming package which includes $15 toward the buffet or another Casino restaurant and $15 Free Bet on the wheel. The cost of the trip is $20 payable upon signing up. We must have at least 32 people to make the trip happen. There are no refunds within three weeks of the trip.

 “The Garden of Eating” The best of Dutchess County, N.Y.

On Wednesday, April 18, the Senior Center will take a bus trip to Dutchess County, N.Y.  Lunch will be at the historic Rhinecliff Inn along the banks of the Hudson River.  Extraordinary meals are prepared by a Culinary Institute of America Chef where you will enjoy a choice of herb-rubbed roasted breast of chicken or oven-baked Atlantic salmon served complete with all the trimmings. After lunch we will make a stop at Gray Horse Farm where you can purchase certified organic meats and eggs to take home with you.  The last stop of the day will be a tour and tasting at Millbrook Vineyards in Millbrook, N.Y. The cost is $84 per person.
