Special Events During Lent at Zion Lutheran Church

The public is welcome at all special events and worship services.

Zion Lutheran Church in Portland has several special events planned for the season of Lent. The members invite everyone to join them for worship and other special events at the , located at 183 William Street.

Worship, during Lent and at other times, begins at 9 a.m. each Sunday, followed by coffee hour. Children’s Sunday School and Adult Education follow worship at 10:15 a.m.

During Lent, Zion will offer a special worship series entitled “Words of Promise.” This series began on Ash Wednesday and continues through the Sundays in Lent, and the Holy Week services. This Sunday, March 4, the theme will be “I Will Do Anything for You” and continues as follows: March 11, “I Will Raise it Up;” March 18, “I Came to Save;” March 25, “Where I am, the Servant Will Be Also;" April 1, Palm Sunday, “The Passion Narrative,” April 5, Maundy Thursday, "The Servant Promise;" April 6, Good Friday, “Promises Kept;” and April 8, Easter Sunday, “A New Promise.”

Building on the “promise” theme, the members of Zion are participating in the Lutheran World Relief’s “Baskets of Promise” appeal. Each week, we will collect a different item to fill school kits for refugee children around the world. On Sunday March 4, there will be a “noisy offering” of loose change that will be used to purchase drawstring backpacks. The collection continues with blue or black pens and unsharpened No. 2 pencils on March 11; 30-centimeter rulers and soft 2½ inch erasers on March 18; boxes of 16 or 24 crayons and small plastic pencil sharpeners on March 25; and blunt safety scissors on April 1.  The school kits will be assembled on Saturday, April 7, from 10 a.m. to noon.

A midweek meal series is also being offered during Lent. On each Wednesday, we will gather for “Story Dinners” at 6:30 p.m. At about 6:45, we will listen to and discuss a dinner theater style story, followed by a brief service of Holy Communion. The menu for Wednesday, March 7, is “Chowder Night” and the story will be “Adam & Eve & God.” The menu for Wednesday, March 14, is “Build A Sub” and the story will be “On Sacrificing Others.” The menu for Wednesday, March 21, is “Chili Night” and the story will be “Joseph’s Pit.”  The menu for Wednesday, March 28, is “March Madness” and the story will be “Moses’ New Job.”

The public is welcome at all special events and worship services each week. Call the office for details at 860-342-2860, or visit us online at www.zionlutheranportland.com.

In North Korea we have the Same old S - - T as we had with his Father and Grandfather. If they wantRead More to destroy their country, Bring it on! He is nothing but a BIG MOUTH. I feel sorry for the N. Korean people to have such a jerk as this dictator. It is too bad they don't have a good democracy.
