East Hampton Housing Proposal Disrupted by Town's Water Issues

A developer wants to convert an old factory into condos, but the project hinges on whether the building can tap into the town's municipal water system.

One developer's plans to renovate a vacant factory building on Summit Street are being stifled by water issues that have long been a nuisance in East Hampton.

The Hartford Courant reported that Developer Haim Zahavi hopes to convert an 1889s, 45,000 square-foot factory into 31 condominiums and office space.

The, however, hinges on whether Zahavi can tap into the town's municipal water source, as a proposal he filed to build wells to accomodate a 7,000-gallon-per-day requirement for the building was rejected by the state, the Courant reported.

While wanting development in the downtown, East Hampton officials are concerned that if this building were added to the municipal system it could put too much of a burden on the town's water supply, the Courant reported.
