11/11/11: End of the World as We Know It? Or Excuse for Marketing Promotions?

Friday is 11/11/11. What makes this day more than just another page off the calendar?

VETERANS DAY

It’s Veterans Day, an important time to thank those who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces.

DOOMSDAY?

There is just an itsy bitsy little chance today could mark the end of the world. At least, that is part of the premise of the movie coming out, 11-11-11.  If you have further interest about whether Friday is when the world says, “All done!” you can join this Facebook group, “11/11/11, End of the World?”

DROIDSDAY?

It’s a sort of fun marketing opportunity for techies. Verizon stores will open later than usual Friday — at 11:11 a.m. — to release the new Droid Razr. And no, the sticker price is not $111.11. It’s $299.99.
Twin girls from Wisconsin will celebrate their 11th birthday, and it will make national news, according to The Washington Post.

WEATHER WEIRDNESS

One hundred years ago, on 11/11/1911, there was a cold snap in the United States and temperatures in some places dropped by 60 degrees in one day, according to the Daily Mail. This year, it’s supposed to be partly cloudy and a bit windy on 11/11/11 in central Connecticut, with a high of 50.

'IT'S ONE LOUDER THAN 10'

For fans of "This is Spinal Tap,' the number 11 has a very special significance. It is, of course, "one louder than 10." The number 11 holds so much sway over fans of the band that many are celebrating Nigel Tufnel Day today ... there's a Facebook group with more than 21,000 members advocating for it and everything. Watch this clip three times ... once for each 11.

BANG YOUR HEAD

On VH-1 Classic, today is being celebrated as National Metal Day. I'm sure somewhere Tipper Gore is heading into her bomb shelter. Highlights include the premiere of "Metal Evolution," an 11-part documentary chronicling the rise of the genre, "Behind the Music Remastered: Megadeth" and the premiere of the ninth season of "That Metal Show."
