Portland Parks & Recreation Activities

Register now for Zumba and Pilates.

 

To register or to obtain additional information for any Parks and Recreation programs, please call 860-342-6757, or you may go online to www.portlandct.org, click on Departments, then to Parks and Recreation. The individual registration forms will be listed as a link on the web page. Forms can be printed, completed and returned back to the Parks and Recreation office. Registration forms must be completed for each program prior to the program start date. The Parks and Recreation Hotline is 860-262-7234. This number is for closures and cancellations or updates.

New Holiday Warm Up Clinic

This is a great chance to get some extra basketball instruction! During the month of December we will be hosting a series of preseason drills and clinics to help prepare youth in grades 1 and 2 for the up and coming basketball season. The clinics will be held at Valley View School for Grades 1 and 2 on Dec. 8 and 15, Girls from 5 to 5:45 p.m. and Boys from 6 to 6:45 p.m. The cost is $10.

Zumba!

A new session of Zumba will begin Wednesday, Jan. 4 and run to Feb. 22.  Zumba Fitness uses Latin rhythms and easy to follow moves to create a dynamic fitness program that will totally change the way you look at fitness. Class is held from 6 to 7 p.m. at Valley View School. The fee is $80 for residents and $90 for non-residents. Your instructor is Brian LaRoe. Ask about the Punch Card system which can be used for Zumba up until June 2012.

Pilates

A new session of Winter Pilates will begin on Thursday, Jan. 12, and run to March 15. Class is held at the Buck Foreman Community Center from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Residents pay $60 and non-residents $70. This is a great exercise option for everyone. Designed to develop a strong core while maintaining loose, limbs, the exercises provide multiple variations to meet the needs of different body types. Class is taught by a Personal Euphoria Pilates Certified Instructor. You can also use the Punch Card System for Pilates!

Adult Co-Ed Volleyball

Adult Co-Ed Volleyball is held on Wednesdays at Gildersleeve School. The competitive program is 5:30 to 7 p.m. and the non-competitive program is from 7 to 8:30 p.m. You must be 18 and older and sneakers must be worn in order to participate. This program is free.

Men’s Drop-In Basketball

The Over 30 Men’s Drop in basketball is being held at Portland middle School from 8 to 9:30 p.m.  The program will run through March 27.

Men’s Under 30 Drop-In Basketball

The Under 30 Men’s Drop in basketball is being held at Portland Middle School from 8 to 9:30 p.m. This program will run through March 29. 

These programs are both free and you must be a Portland resident to attend.

19th Annual CRPA Hotshot Basketball Shooting Contest

The Hot shot contest is a state-wide event. Each player will have one minute to shoot from “hotspots” placed on one half of the court. The contest challenges a player’s speed, shooting, dribbling and rebounding abilities. The top scorer for each age division will move to the next level. A birth certificate will be required to move to the county level.  The contest is to promote basketball enthusiasm as well as basketball skills, fun, physical fitness and good sportsmanship. Open to boys and girls ages 9 to 15 as of Dec. 31, 2011. The contest will be held Tuesday, Jan.10, at the PMS gym. This program is free.

Age as of 12/31/2011:

Age 9 and 10: Registration, 5:15 p.m.; start, 5:30 p.m.

Age 11 and 12: Registration, 6:15 p.m.; start: 6:30 p.m.

Age 13 to 15:            Registration, 7 p.m.; start, 7:15 p.m.
