Crafts for kids, bus trip to New York and more.

To register or to obtain additional information for any Parks & Recreation programs, please call 860-342-6757, or you may go online to www.portlandct.org, click on Departments, then to Parks & Recreation. The individual registration forms will be listed as a link on the web page. Forms can be printed, completed and returned back to the Parks & Recreation office. Registration Forms must be completed for each program prior to the program start date. The Parks & Recreation Hotline is 860-262-7234. This number is for closures and cancellations or updates.

Adult men's tennis league forming

The Parks & Recreation Department is looking into starting a Thursday evening adult men’s tennis league. If you are interested, please pass the word and call the office at 860-342-6757 to have your name placed on the list.

Youth Golf Lessons with PGA Golf Pro Gerry D’Amora – Sept. 19 to Oct. 10 (new start date)

This workshop is designed to acquaint participants with the game of golf. The daily schedule includes demonstrations, learning the rules of golf, golf skills and techniques, learning the game (putting and chipping), golf etiquette and more! If you have clubs, bring them.  Sneakers are allowed. Lessons are held Mondays, 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., at Portland West for ages 6 to 12.  The fee is $85.

New with Parks & Recreation

Purchase a card for six classes at $60, residents, or $66, non-resident.  We are offering a Punch Card that will be good through Spring 2012.  The card is only valid for the program you choose, however, you can cross over sessions (fall, winter & spring). If you do not use all six classes, there is no refund.

Zumba!  with Brian LaRoe!

Class is held Wednesdays at Valley View School from 6 to 7 p.m. The fee is $80, residents, $90, non-residents, or check out the new Punch Card system!

Zumba fitness uses Latin rhythms and easy to follow moves to create a dynamic fitness program that will totally change the way you look at fitness! Once you’ve tried Zumba, you will be hooked onto the most amazing fitness program you have ever experience! 

Mobile Art Room presents “Crafts Nights For Kids”

This program is for boys and girls, 3rd grade and up. No art experience is necessary, just a desire to have fun being creative. Your instructors will be Kearen Enright and Michelle Donahue. The program is held Thursdays at the Buck Foreman Community Center from 6 to 7 p.m.  The six-week session is $60, which includes all materials.

American Red Cross “When I’m In Charge”

This program is designed for ages 7 and up and includes topics such as answering the door or telephone, computer safety, gun safety and who and when to call in an emergency. The program gives youth increased confidence and the ability to feel safe and in control when home alone, by teaching them to act safely, think responsibly and be independent decision makers. Class is held Monday, Oct. 24, at the Senior Center from 5:30 to 7:30. The fee is $30.

New York City on Your Own – Saturday, Nov. 26

Join the Parks and Recreation annual after Thanksgiving bus trip to New York City! This is a great chance to see a show, do some holiday shopping or just get away for the day! Anyone under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Payment is due upon signing up and there are no refunds within three weeks of departure. Depart the Brownstone Intermediate School at 7:30 a.m. The fee is$35.
