Storm Hits East Hampton, Portland [Video]

Nearly 1,300 without power in the two towns.

 

The forecast was right. Strong thunderstorms moved through the state Wednesday afternoon with downpours, strong winds, hail and lots of lightning.

In East Hampton and Portland, it was mostly heavy rain and lightning that moved through the are around 3 p.m. and more could be on the way before the afternoon and evening is finished. A severe thunderstorm watch remains in effect for Middlesex County until 9 p.m.

Other parts of the state are under severe thunderstorm and flash flood warnings.

Damage has been reported throughout the state, with trees down in Portland and Middletown, among others. Hail was reported in Portland, Cromwell and Middletown.

Connecticut Light & Power reports that nearly 35,000 customers are without power as of 4:30 p.m. In East Hampton 723 were without power as and in Portland, 565.

Also, the Little League softball tournament scheduled for Wednesday at Seamster Park in East Hampton has been postponed until Thursday. The championship game will be played Friday.
