Uganda Film Night

Epoch Arts is pleased to present Uganda Film Night, featuring three short documentaries related to Uganda, introduced by the filmmakers themselves.

"Aghalala: All Together - a story of Uganda Village Project", by Jackie Valenzuela, tells of the remarkable success of Uganda Village Project in saving children’s lives in rural Uganda. In “Olugendo: Kule’s Journey”, also by Ms. Valenzuela, we journey with Kule through Uganda and discover through his eyes the value of wildlife and nature conservation to one of the poorest countries in the world. Ms. Valenzuela is a 2002 graduate of East Hampton High School, now teaching in Woodbridge, CT after earning a Master’s degree in documentary filmmaking at Hofstra University.

“Twero: The Road to Health”, by 2012 Yale School of Medicine graduate Michael Otremba, MD, follows a Ugandan journalist who investigates how patients often must seek care outside of an underfunded and overburdened public system. Desperate for help, patients are turning to an unregulated private health sector, where services are accessible, but at a significant cost. When patients cannot pay their medical bills, doctors are resorting to imprisoning them.  This film won best documentary feature at the 2012 NYLA International Film Festival.

The films will be followed by a panel discussion featuring the filmmakers and Alison Schroth Hayward, MD, Chair of the Board of Uganda Village Project (UVP).

As this is a fundraising event for UVP, there is a suggested donation of $20, or $10 for students. Coffee and tea will be provided and desserts will be available. Uganda crafts will be on sale.
