Forbes Gives United Way Efficient Charity Nod

United Way has been named one of just five “Forbes Picks: All-Star Charities – Top Rankings for Efficient Groups.”

Forbes magazine publishes a list each year of the largest U.S. charities and this year, United Way continues to top the list at number one. Last year, United Ways raised $3.9 billion in the U.S. and $5.14 billion around the world, making United Way the world’s largest privately supported charity.

We are part of a worldwide network in 40 countries and territories, including more than 1,200 local organizations in the United States. United Ways are advancing the common good, creating opportunities for a better life for all by focusing on the key building blocks of education, income and health.  Here in Middlesex County, we also focus on a fourth building block, affordable housing.

While we are part of a large worldwide network, I should remind you that your donations to Middlesex United Way stay local. Just 1% of funds raised go to United Way Worldwide. In this network, we benefit from strategic direction, support, expertise, sharing, and more so that we can do the best job locally to advance the common good. We are also governed locally and decisions are made locally on how best to advance the common good in Middlesex County.

In addition to being big, United Way is also efficient.  In a new category created by Forbes this year, United Way has been named one of just five “Forbes Picks: All-Star Charities – Top Rankings for Efficient Groups.” This designation was based on the overall percentage of donations used in program implementation.

Right here in Middlesex County we are dedicated to efficiency and effectiveness — and we are proud to be part of a worldwide network with a commitment to these same standards. Nearly 82 cents of every dollar donated to Middlesex United Way supports local programs and services.

Know that when you make a gift to United Way, your money is used for the most important needs in Middlesex County, and it’s getting results. We know you want to feel good about what you give, and we hope you know we appreciate your commitment.

Nationally, United Way is celebrating its 125th anniversary this year, and here in Middlesex County, United Way has been working to create a better community since 1935. Thank you for keeping us around and for trusting us to advance the common good.

In light of Forbes’ recognition of United Way programs, we are energized to continue serving the community to create lasting partnerships that drive long-term change in education, income, health and housing.
