Debate or Forum? Voters Deserve It.

I am disappointed that my opponent does not share my enthusiasm; as he declined to participate in last night's Candidate Forum at Sears Park Pavilion.

One of the staples of our competitive form of democracy is the candidate debate or forum, where candidates running for office appear before the voters in a public venue to discuss issues and priorities. These events illustrate the difference – or lack of difference – between candidates and help voters make informed decisions. I am eager to participate in these forums– and I am disappointed that my opponent does not share my enthusiasm; as he declined to participate in last night's Candidate Forum at Sears Park Pavilion.

Over the last two weeks there have been two other candidate forums, besides the one sponsored by The Chatham Party. The first was a Colchester Business Association, Meet the Candidates, which my opponent did not attend. The second was an East Hampton/Portland division meeting of the Middlesex Chamber.  He attended this meeting, although it was held out of district. One more opportunity is scheduled.  It is another division meeting, this time in East Haddam, on Oct. 25th.  It will be held at the Gelston House at 8am.  Please call the Middlesex Chamber to pre-register.

In a phone conversation with my opponent several weeks ago, I asked if he would participate in debates around the district.  He agreed. Today, I renew my pledge: I am ready to attend and participate in any candidate forum or debate of his choosing.  The voters deserve a chance to see and hear for themselves why they should support one candidate over another.  My campaign is currently in discussions with local news organizations that might co-sponsor an event.  I am still hopeful we can find a venue and moderator.

The 34th District deserves strong leadership, including a willingness to listen to those we may disagree with. We need someone in Hartford to stand strong for our needs in this district, against 150 other State Reps doing the same for their consituents. I believe I am that leader. If I haven’t yet knocked on your door and you have questions for me, please contact me, 860-227-3411.  I love this district; put me to work for you.
