Decoding Dyslexia CT Achieves Success with Dyslexia Legislation!

Decoding Dyslexia CT achieves success at the Capitol with the signing of
Public Act 14-39 to recognize Dyslexia as a primary Specific Learning Disability
and require Dyslexia intervention as part of new teacher certification
curriculum.

On May 28, 2014 Members of Decoding Dyslexia CT, along with state
legislators and local officials, witnessed the signing of Public Act 14-39, An
Act Concerning Dyslexia and Special Education, by Connecticut Governor
Dannel P. Malloy at the Helen Street School.

Public Act 14-39 requires the state Department of Education to add "Specific Learning Disability/Dyslexia"
as a primary disability on the Individual Education Plan form used by
Connecticut schools for the provision of special education. It also
requires that the curriculum of any new teacher preparation program leading to professional certification must include the detection and recognition of,
and evidence-based interventions for, students with dyslexia.

Decoding Dyslexia CT, a grassroots organization consisting of Connecticut
students parents, teachers and advocates, has been eagerly promoting this
bill for the past year by emailing, phoning and sharing their testimonies
with legislators in order to increase the identification and support of dyslexic students in our Connecticut public schools.  Allison Quirion, the
Founding member of Decoding Dyslexia - CT and mother of a dyslexic son,
said in her opening remarks  "The early signs of [my son's] dyslexia are so apparent when I look back.  If only I knew then what I know now, because as the saying goes "Knowledge is power".

Thank you to Governor Malloy, Senator Osten and all of our legislators and supports for your support and efforts.
