1 Dead in East Hampton Crash

The car went off the road and ended up on its side in the woods in the Friday afternoon incident.

The driver of a car that careened off the road Friday afternoon on Young Street in East Hampton was killed after the vehicle hit a utility-pole guide wire and ended up on its side.

At about 1:30 p.m. Friday, police responded to a report of a motor-vehicle accident on Young Street in East Hampton. East Hampton Police, East Hampton Fire Services and East Hampton Volunteer Ambulance responded to the scene.

When first-responders arrived, they found a single vehicle that had left the roadway, struck a guide-wire for a utility pole, and continued into the woods off the eastbound lanes of Route 196, where it struck a stone and some trees and ended up on its driver's-side doors.

The driver was found unresponsive and was pronounced dead at the scene by medics. The cause of the accident has not been determined and the incident remains under investigation. The body was released to the Office of the Chief State's Medical Examiner.

Several homes in the area were without power Friday afternoon because of damage to the utility pole.

Police were withholding further details, including the victim's name, until family was notified.
