Makayla, a sophomore at East Hampton High School, died at Connecticut Children's Medical Center on May 21, 2002, after taking the drug Ecstasy at the Nedobity's home at 62 Haddam Neck Road with the brothers and another friend on May 17. It was the first death in Connecticut linked to Ecstasy.

Joseph Nedobity, Makayla's boyfriend, was sentenced in May of 2006 for his role in her death to five years in prison, suspended after 30 months, and two years probation. The sentence was part of a plea deal where Nedobity pleaded no contest to a reduced charge of criminally negligent homicide and to a prior third-degree burglary charge.

In 2010, he was sentenced on an unrelated charge for possession of narcotics to six months in jail.
