National Weather Service Confirms Tornado Was Cause of Monday Storm Damage

Widespread damage in Windsor Locks and East Windsor.

This article written by Tim Jensen.

6:35 p.m. Update:

The National Weather Service has confirmed that the windstorm that caused widespread damage earlier today, including the destruction of the Sports World bubble in East Windsor, was indeed a tornado.

Original Story:

Two lanes of southbound I-91 are blocked after the roof of the Sports World dome in East Windsor blew onto the highway during this afternoon's severe wind and rainstorm.

Police and fire vehicles are choking the highway and trying to clean up the debris. Reports from around Windsor Locks and East Windsor indicate major wind damage in the form of downed trees and power lines from the touchdown of a possible tornado, although officials haven't confirmed that yet.

Route 159 is closed near the train station in Windsor Locks next to the Exit 42 onramp. There's also widespread flooding on Center Street.
