Updated: East Hampton Boy Killed in Crash

Accident on Wopowog Road involved underage driver.

Dec. 26 2 p.m. update:

Though police have not yet released the identities of those involved in the accident on Sunday night, Patch has learned through several sources that the name of the deceased is Matt D'Amico. Matt was a student at East Hampton Middle School.

By 1 p.m. on Monday, a tribute remembering Matt had been placed at the site of the tree on Wopowog Road where the crash occured.

A car accident involving an underage driver has resulted in the death of an 11-year-old East Hampton boy.

The accident occurred on Sunday at about 8 p.m.

The initial investigation has found that the 12-year-old was a front-seat passenger in a car driven by his 15-year-old male cousin from New Britain. The car collided with a tree on Wopowog Road, near the intersection of Brook Hill Drive. According to police, speed and operator inexperience were the primary factors in the cause of the crash.

The 12-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene. The 15-year-old was transported to Hartford Hospital by Life Star medical helicopter. According to police, the 15-year-old sustained significant injuries, but is in stable condition. The identities of the parties involved are not being released at this time.

Police are continuing their investigation.
