East Hampton Man Involved in Portland Crash

Strikes tree on Route 66 after leaving hospital.

 

An East Hampton man was involved in an accident on Route 66 in Portland Sunday evening after losing control of his car and crashing into a tree in front of the Riverdale Motel.

Police said that Shawn Vecchitto had been released from the hospital only a couple hours earlier and was on his way home when he apparently blacked out. Vecchitto's car clipped a utility poll shearing the right front end of his car, then went off the road and striking a tree causing significant front end damage.

Vecchitto, in his early 30s, was transported to Middlesex Hospital. The extent of his injuries is unknown. There were no other passengers.

The accident remains under investigation.
