UPDATE: East Hampton Man Missing in Connecticut River

State police continue to search for 37-year-old swimmer who hasn't been seen since Sunday afternoon.

Update 1 p.m.

An East Hampton man who went missing Sunday during a swim in the Connecticut River in Chester has been identifieid Dariusz Czarnota, 37.

According to a Connecticut State Police press release distributed Monday, state troopers responded to the Chester Point Marina after getting a report of a possible drowning nearby.

Police determined that Czarnota, 64 Saffron Lane in East Hampton, was swimming in the river with his brother, and that the pair had just left the western shore just north of the marina.

The brothers were swimming for a boat moored in the middle of the river when, at that point, Czarnota went missing. Czarnota's brother told police he was swimming a head of his missing brother when he looked behind and could not see him. He immediately called 911 after getting back to shore.

The search continues today for Czarnota's body. The state police said the search is now in a recovery effort.

State and local officials continue to search Monday morning for a swimmer who went missing in the Connecticut River on Sunday.

Lt. J. Paul Vance said the man, a 36-year-old East Hampton resident, went missing in Chester around 2 p.m. and that search and rescue crews were called to the river to find him.

The man was reported as diving off a dock near Pattaconk Yacht Club with his brother, although he never making it back to shore, according to WFSB.

Chief James Grzybowski, of the Chester Hose Co., told The Hartford Courant the man is presumed drowned. Vance said the state police are expected to identify him this morning.

Vance said the search was suspended at 11 p.m. however it resumed again Monday morning.

The Department of Environmental and Energy Protection, U.S. Coast Guard and fire crews from Chester, Middletown, Essex and Old Saybrook are also assisting in the search.
