East Hampton Police ID Drivers in Fatal Two-Car Crash

A 67-year-old man died, and another man was hospitalized with serious injuries, following an accident on Route 66 last week.

Police identified Tuesday the drivers involved in a two-car collision on Route 66 last week as Joseph Witkavitch, 67, and Nicholas Pignatello, 33.

Witkavitch, a Stratford resident, died from his injuries after being flown to Hartford Hospital. Police said he was driving a Toyota Prius when the accident occurred near the intersection with Route 151.

Pignatello, of East Hampton, was driving a pick-up truck when the accident happened. Police said both vehicles collided head-on at about 5:41 p.m.

Pignatello sustained serious injuries following the crash, and was also treated at Hartford Hospital. He has since been released. 

Police have not provided any further details as to what may have prompted the crash. The accident is still under investigation and no charges have been filed.
