East Hampton Police Make Burglary Arrest

Suspect has long criminal history.

East Hampton Police arrested a man allegedly trying to break into a home on Friday.

Police responded to a call at about 12:01 p.m. of a burglary in progress at 6 Laurel Glen Drive. According to police, the call was from a next-door neighbor who witnessed a man climbing into the window of his neighbor's house. The witness reported that the suspect fled the area and began running northwest on Laurel Glen Drive toward the East Hampton High School. The suspect was described as a white male wearing a ball cap, white tank top, shorts, sneakers, and was carrying a black backpack.

Sgt. Michael Green arrived in the area shortly thereafter and began searching for the suspect. Within a few minutes, Green located William Shane Landry, 36, of no certain address, walking toward the high school near the Hills Avenue and North Maple Street intersection.

Landry matched the description given by the witness - white male wearing a ball cap, white tank top, shorts, sneakers, and was carrying a black backpack.  After some brief roadside questioning and a positive identification of Landry by the witness, Landry was arrested and taken into custody without incident by Green and Officer Michael Salafia, police said in a press release.

The case is still under investigation and it still unknown what, if any, items were stolen by Landry from inside the residence. He was found to have some items of value including a GPS unit, a digital video camera and Bose headphones in his backpack but their origins have not been determined, police said. No one was home at the residence at the time of the burglary.

Landry is a multi-convicted felon and has many convictions for burglary, larceny, and possession of narcotics in his criminal history. He has served several years in Connecticut prisons as a result.

Landry was charged with third-degree burglary and third-degree criminal mischief.  He was held on a $50,000 bond and will be arraigned in Middlesex Superior Court on Monday.

According to police, the criminal mischief charge stems from damage he caused to a radon gas abatement system he climbed in order to enter the house through the window. The full extent of the damage is not known at this time.
