Fake Bomb Suspect Gets Probation, Ordered to Community Service

East Hampton resident Sean Doran was sentenced on Thursday in federal court.

The 21-year-old East Hampton man who police said put a fake bomb at the front door of East Hampton High School in January dodged jail time in the federal case.

Instead, a federal judge in Hartford ordered that Sean Doran serve three years of probation, as well as a $1,500 fine and 150 hours of community service. Doran, who pleaded guilty in April to the Jan. 12 bomb hoax, was sentenced Thursday.

While Doran does not have a criminal record in Connecticut, he still faces lesser state charges stemming from his arrest by the East Hampton Police Department.

Online records show he is due in Middlesex Superior Court on Aug. 22 to answer to charges of a breach of peace, reckless endangerment and threatening stemming from his arrest in January.

Police said the fake bomb was made up of a rectangular box, approximately 12 inches, by eight inches, by four inches in size, taped together with orange and red duct tape, with a white egg timer on top.

The federal case was handled by Judge Alvin W. Thompson.
