PD: Unemployed City Man Had Crack, Cash, Home Full of Pricey Apparel, Electronics

Middletown Police say a 43-year-old North End resident admitted he buys $200 worth of crack several times a week and sells it at a 75-percent markup.

A 43-year-old unemployed North End man is facing drug dealing charges after he was found with cash, a home full of high-end apparel and electronics, and crack cocaine within reach of two children, according to Middletown Police.

On Dec. 6 at 7:49 p.m., narcotics officers served a search warrant on Jose E. Guzman, 43, of Grand Street, who was home with his girlfriend and her 10- and 5-year-old sons with a plastic bag on the couch with 28 smaller bags of crack cocaine, (4.4 grams total) the report says.

A search revealed $520 in cash in the pockets of Guzman, who police say is unemployed and on Section 8 housing.

A police canine found three 8mg of Suboxone tablets in his jacket pocket, the report says, and .6 grams of marijuana a glass jar, thousands of dollars' worth of new, "high-end sneakers, shoes, clothes and electronics."

Police say Guzman buys an "eight-ball" every other day for $200 (3.9 grams of crack), breaks it down and sells it for $350. While being arrested, the report says, Guzman's phone constantly rang with calls asking for crack.

He was charged with non-student possessing drugs and drug paraphernalia near school, possession of narcotics and with intent to sell, distribution of narcotics less than 1,500 feet from school, and risk of injury to a child.

How about a little followup on the social safety net benefits he may be collecting? And since he lives with his girlfriend, include whatever they may be collecting too. My guess is they get more each month than someone working full time for $12 an hour. So, free stuff & a lucrative tax free side business. Stop incentivizing people to do nothing for themselves.

I bet you are 100 % correct ! If I had any say at all--I would change our unemployment system 150%. I would force people who are collecting to take available jobs (they're out there----eg. new TACO BELL is hiring). Rather than only making them take jobs that are prestigious enough for them, I would make them take any available jobs and then the state would only pay them "the difference" between an, albeit, lower papying job.......and what they are collecting now. State could save a bundle and Ct. would have the LOWEST unemployment rate in the country.
