State Charges Dropped for East Hampton Fake Bomb Suspect

Sean Doran pleaded guilty to the bomb hoax charges in federal court last April.

State charges against an East Hampton man convicted in federal court earlier this year of planting a fake bomb at a local school were dropped Thursday.

State prosecutors decided not to pursue charges of breach of peace, reckless endangerment and threatening against Sean Doran, 21, instead issuing a nolle to the charges. Prosecutors said that they agreed with federal sentencing and did not wish to continue to pursue the charges at the state level.

Doran was convicted in federal court on a charge of intentionally conveying false or misleading information and a hoax. He was scheduled to serve three years of probation, along with 150 hours of community service and $1,500 fine.

The charges stemmed from an incident on Jan. 12 when police said Doran put a fake bomb at the front door of East Hampton High School.

Police said the fake bomb was made up of a rectangular box, approximately 12 inches, by eight inches, by four inches in size, taped together with orange and red duct tape, with a white egg timer on top.
