Suspect Arrested in 2010 East Hampton Break-In, Firearm Theft

Police said a Rhode Island man, John Berouty, stole jewelry and a weapon after a break-in at a White Birch Road home.

 

East Hampton police arrested a Rhode Island man Thursday in connection with a break-in of a White Birch Road home nearly two years ago.

Police said 46-year-old John Berouty, of Pawtucket, stole jewelry and a handgun from a home in December of 2010. Berouty left evidence at the scene, including blood stains and a cellular telephone, that were later linked back to him, police said.

East Hampton Police Officer John Wilson tied Berouty to the crime following an anlysys of DNA evidence and the phone. Police applied for an arrest warrant in July 2011.

Local police extradited Berouty from Massachusetts, where he was incarcerated at the Cedar Junction Correctional Facility in Walpole, MA, on unrelated charges.

Berouty faces he following charges: third-degree burglary, fourth-degree larceny, theft of a firearm, criminal possession of a firearm and third-degree criminal mischief. He was taken to the East Hampton Police Department where he was processed and held on $100,000.00 court-ordered bond.

Berouty is due for arraignment at Middlesex Superior Court on Friday.
