Cordeiro Won't Seek Re-Election to Town Council

Wants to take more time to focus on family, job.

Thom Cordeiro, a member of the East Hampton Town Council for eight years, announced on Tuesday he will not seek re-election in 2011.

Cordeiro, a Republican, joins Democrats John Tuttle and Christopher Goff as sitting council members who will not be on the ballot in November. Tuttle and Goff also chose not to run.

“My kids are getting older and have a lot of stuff that they’re into and I want to be more available to them,” Cordeiro said. “I have an important job at Stanley Black and Decker and they’ve been very supportive over the years. I’m just going to focus on my family and on my job. There isn’t much more to it than that.”

Cordeiro, married and the father of three, served on the council from 2001 to 2005 and again from 2007 to 2011, taking a couple of years off in between to move and settle into a new house. Prior to being on the council, he served as an alternate on the board of assessment appeals.

“I care deeply about East Hampton and I appreciated my time on the board,” he said. “I’m proud of some of the things that were accomplished.”

Cordeiro did not rule out running again at some point down the road.

“You never know what the future holds, but I would say I am committed to being the best father and husband that I can be for now,” said Cordeiro, who added that the Republican Town Committee did ask him to run again. “My kids have seen me in a lot of meetings and quite busy with the town and I want to now devote all my efforts to my family and my job.”

The Republican Town Committee is expected to announce its slate of candidates for the November municipal elections before the end of July.
