Malloy, Federal Officials, to Rededicate Arrigoni Bridge Tuesday

A ceremony for the Portland Bridge, which reopened to full traffic last month following a rehabilitation, will include Sen. Richard Blumenthal, Rep. Rosa DeLauro, Mayor Dan Drew and First Selectwoman Susan Bransfield.

With a year of renovation now complete, a group of local and state dignitaries are expected to hold a rededication ceremony of the Arrigoni Bridge in Portland Tuesday morning.

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy will give the welcoming remarks in a ceremony on Main Street in Portland at 1:30 p.m. and will be accompanied by Portland First Selectwoman Susan Bransfield and Middletown Mayor Dan Drew.

The Arrigoni Bridge, known commonly as the “Portland Bridge,” was built in 1938 and was the largest bridge of its kind at the time. The state Department of Transportation began renovation on the bridge in 2011 and traffic was periodically reduced to two lanes for over a year.

The bridge opened up to four lanes on Sept. 15, two months ahead of schedule.

During Tuesday’s ceremony, the bridge’s original 1938 sign that will be remounted along the sidewalk in the middle of the bridge will be unveiled.
