Republicans Unanimously Nominate Carpino

Carpino: I will continue to make sure the assembly district has a strong presence in Hartford.

With a strong record of leadership, coalition building and community involvement, Christie Carpino was unanimously nominated for a second term as State Representative on Wednesday night.

Cromwell Selectman Allen Spotts gave the nominating speech for Carpino. Spotts talked about Carpino’s dedication to the 32nd House District and how she has distinguished herself in Hartford despite being a freshman legislator.

“Given the honor and privilege of serving another term, I will continue to make sure the assembly district has a strong presence in Hartford," she said in a press release.

Carpino, who ran unopposed for the nomination, highlighted her first term record as a state legislator:

  • Voting against the largest tax increase in state history, while proposing an alternative.
  • Co-sponsored and fought for legislation implementing safety procedures outlined by a special commission created after the accident that killed six people and injured many others at the Kleen Energy Plant.
  • Supported a bi-partisan jobs bill aimed to help stabilize the business climate in Connecticut, The legislature passed a jobs bill in October 2011, which was a good first step; however the legislation didn't go far enough to help small businesses. I will work to encourage changes to our system that will assist small businesses and provide opportunities to create jobs and grow our economy.
  • Authored and introduced a bill which mandates a parent or legal guardian report a missing child under the age of 12 within 24 hours, in cases where the parent knew or should have known that the child was unaccounted for. It’s our job, as parents and legislators, to protect our most vulnerable citizens, our children.

"The jobs bill did expand opportunities for small businesses who hire veterans and those who are unemployed, but there is a lot more we can do. I look forward to making sure our state government is working for the people, not against them,” Carpino said. "I plan to continue meeting with as many residents as possible to hear concerns and strive to make Connecticut a better place for all of us to work and raise our families."

The 32nd Assembly District includes the towns of Cromwell and Portland as a result of last year's redistricting.

“I am sad to see the portion of Middletown I currently represent move into an adjacent district – as a result of mandated redistricting — but I will continue to vigorously represent Middletown residents until my existing term is over which is January 2013.
