Services Available to Residents in Wake of Storm

Showers, water, brush disposal and more.

In case you missed it, East Hampton and Portland are making certain services available to residents because of Hurricane Irene. Follow Patch for any changes.

East Hampton

The town has erected a banner in front of town hall to provide important information to residents.

The high school will remain open Sunday and Monday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Residents can shower and charge cell phones, laptops and other electronics. Snacks, bottled water, Meals Ready to Eat (MREs and more are available. People can bring empty containers as well to fill with water. Containers can be filled using the spigot/hose to the left of the outside of the  main entrance, even when the school is closed.

The transfer station in East Hampton will be open each Wednesday during September in addition to Saturday. Brush fees will be waived during the month. No sticker will be needed, though proof of residency, such as a driver’s license, will be required. The town will not be picking up brush.

Residents will have till Sept. 7 to pay their taxes without being considered delinquent for the month of September.

Portland

The high school is open for residents to take showers. Hot showers are available from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday and Monday. Residents are reminded to bring their own toiletries. Residents may also charge electronics there. Potable water is available at Company No. 2 Firehouse. There is an outdoor faucet available to fill containers.

The town has decided to do another brush pickup this year. Public works will conduct roadside pickup through Sept. 30.

The Department of Motor Vehicles will extend the validity of driver licenses, vehicle registrations and other credentials expiring Aug. 27 through Sept. 12. They remain valid during that time period, but must be renewed by Sept. 12.
