East Hampton Student Named Soccer Captain at Local College

Joey Plude is one of two captains who will lead the Cougars at Manchester Community College into the 2012 season, which starts this Saturday.

Sophomores Steve German (Coventry) and Joey Plude (East Hampton) were named captains of the Manchester Community College men’s soccer team for the 2012 season.

Both were key players for outgoing coach Jim Insinga in 2011 when MCC captured its eighth NJCAA Region XXI, Division III title. German had a 1.17 GAA over 16 games with 67 saves as the starting goalkeeper while Plude had a goal and a pair of assists from the midfield for the 13-5 Cougars.

“Steve is very competitive and pro-active and the guys listen to him,” according to first-year coach Darren Foster, who played for Insinga and was his top assistant last season.

Plude is moving from the midfield to a central defensive role and has been outstanding through the preseason. “Joey was recently put in a leadership position and has stepped up big time,” Foster said.

The Cougars open the 2012 season on Saturday, September 1 when they host Suffolk County CC at 1 p.m.
