CIAC Says Let Them Play

Because of weather, policy waived prohibiting Sunday play

With the high school winter sports season winding down, rescheduling games that were cancelled because of snow days or because of schools being closed so roofs could be cleared, was simply becoming too difficult.

As a result, the CIAC Board of Control has approved the following plan to address the numerous cancellations.

The CIAC will waive the policy prohibiting Sunday play for the remainder of the regular winter season. This waiver applies only to the current winter season. Schools will be allowed to schedule make-ups on Sundays for the remainder of the winter season providing:

  • No Sunday athletic event may start prior to 12:30 p.m.
  • Make-up games/meets rescheduled to Sunday must be by mutual agreement.
  • No changes will be made to the last dates to count, entry deadlines or competition dates for CIAC winter tournaments. The last day to count and the CIAC Winter tournament schedule will remain as scheduled in all sports.
  • Minimum established game standards necessary to qualify for tournament entry remain.

Schools are reminded that CIAC rules prohibit league tournament contests being scheduled or rescheduled in place of regular season contests or make-up games.

“We’ve allowed teams to play on Sunday several times in the past," CIAC spokesman Matt Fischer told the New Haven Register. "Two springs ago we did it when we had the swine flu issue.”

The Shoreline Conference girls' tournament begins Feb. 17. The Shoreline boys' tournament begins Feb. 24.
