The 20th annual Liberty Bank Holiday Classic was held in East Hampton last week, with the boys winning the title over Old Saybrook and the girls finishing runner-up to Lyman Memorial. It was a great time put on by the sports boosters, with plenty of food and snacks served in the high school lobby and even some free T-shirts tossed into the crowd. The tournament enables the boosters to raise funds for programs they sponsor throughout the year. Following the championship games, All-Tournament teams were announced, and they were:

Girls - Sarah Denihan, East Hampton; Ashley Chasse, East Hampton; Casey Kelley, Lyman Memorial; Emily Peay; Lyman Memorial; Lyla Stanland, Old Lyme; T’Nasia Brown, Hyde.

Boys - Matt Vasquenza, East Hampton; Kyle Adams, East Hampton; Max Alden, Old Saybrook; Michael Barrett, Old Saybrook; Dante Watson, Vinal Tech; Brian Myjak, Lyman Memorial.

Peay and Vasquenza were named tournament most valuable players.

The Portland girls were runner-up in the Erica Garrett Memorial Holiday Tournament in Rocky Hill, defeating the Terriers but losing to Berlin. Alyssa Unikewicz and Meaghan Rodgers were selected for the All-Tournament team. On Friday, the Highlanders beat Coventry, 37-21. Portland is in the middle of a stretch that has it playing six consecutive games away from home. If a 2-1 week wasn't good enough news for Highlanders fans, consider this: the defending state champs have a better record (7-2) than they did at this time last season.

The boys remain winless but had their closest game to date last week, losing to Canton 51-40 on Wednesday. The Highlanders will have the opportunity to break into the victory column when they next play on Thursday against Hale-Ray (1-5).

On Saturday, the East Hampton and Portland boys will play at 11:30 a.m. on the Highlanders' court.

Technical difficulties: Yes, Patch has them from time-to-time. Such was the case with the story on the Liberty Bank Holiday Tournament championship games that was published on Friday. Not all of the photos appeared with the story. Some of the missing are included here. Unfortunately, others refuse to cooperate. Hopefully, this problem will be corrected soon.
