Why Running Up the Score is a Classless Thing to Do

A lacrosse tournament offers up a lesson in restraint.

OK, I agree that stiffer competition can make a team better in the long run. I get that. It’s why the younger brothers and sisters of siblings involved in sports often show advanced skills early on. So there we were on a Saturday afternoon at a lacrosse tournament with teams from Connecticut, Massachusetts and New York. I got the feeling that the team from Long Island wasn’t making the trip to lose to a team made up of mostly football players and former baseball players (as one mom perfectly stated). I’ll make a crazy assumption that the team from LI spends the entire calendar year playing together as a unit. They could have been blindfolded and still have known where their teammates were. It was fun to watch — at first.   With each game…

Looking For Something New For Lunch Or Dinner? Try Quiche!

Quiche makes a wholesome and quick alternative to a sandwich at lunch and is an easy dinner for on-the-go families.

Quiche got a bad rap years ago for being wimpy, thus the saying "real men don't eat quiche" was termed. I don't agree. I think quiche is easy to make, stores well in the refrigerator, and makes a quick lunch or light dinner.  All you need to do is slice off a piece and microwave it for a satisfying and hot meal. There are endless filling combinations such as bacon, sausage, ham, with all types of veggies such as mushrooms, peppers, broccoli, and cheeses such as Swiss and provolone. Quiche is also a vegetarian's friend as it does well with so many mixtures of vegetables and cheese. Here's one of my favorite combinations: Crab, Leek & Swiss Quiche 6 or 8 portions 1 pie shell, your own, or store-bought fitted in the bottom of a 9”-10” …

Celebrity Apprentice, Billboard Music Awards, Nurse Jackie

TV tips for Sunday May 20, 2012

The Celebrity Apprentice, 9 p.m., NBC And the winner is … In a million years I would not have pegged Arsenio and Clay Aiken to be the finalists. Right? Or certainly that snot Aubrey to have come in third. Which is why we love the Apprentice! I am picking Clay to win. For no particular reason, other than I still feel bad I voted for Ruben in the Idol finale. The 2012 Billboard Music Awards, 8 p.m., ABC “Festivities at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas recognize artists for the fan support they've garnered; musical performances include Carrie Underwood, Justin Bieber, LMFAO and the Wanted; musician Stevie Wonder receives the 2012 Billboard Icon Award.” Nurse Jackie, 9 p.m., Showtime The best evolution in this new season is not the trials and …

Liquor Stores in State Can now Sell on Sunday

New law gets mixed reaction in state.

For the first time in Connecticut since at least 1934, people will be able to buy alcohol this Sunday, and every Sunday thereafter. Gov. Dannel P. Malloy signed into law a bill amending Connecticut’s Blue Laws, giving permittees the option of selling liquor and beer from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday. Malloy said the bill moves “in the direction of making Connecticut competitive for this industry.” “I'm sure what will be said is that this is about Sundays, but it's more than that," Malloy said. "It is literally about our ability to compete with states that have been taking money away from us on an ongoing basis. When the product is less expensive and more convenient to purchase in surrounding states, you lose $570 million worth of sales.” …

Tropical Storm Alberto Forms Near South Carolina

Minimal impact expected for Connecticut.

And just when you thought this great weekend weather might be here to stay for at least a little while, the first tropical storm of the 2012 Atlantic Hurricane Season has taken shape off the South Carolina coastline. An area of low pressure centered about 140 miles east-southeast of Charleston, S.C., has developed into Tropical Storm Alberto, according to the AccuWeather.com Hurricane Center. It does not appear Connecticut has much to worry about. The effects of Alberto will only graze the state and as a weaker storm. As of Sunday at 1 a.m., Alberto was a low-end tropical storm with maximum sustained winds of 50 mph. The storm started Saturday as a non-tropical area of low pressure, but quickly acquired tropical characteristics as it …

Connecticut Connections to the Lusitania: Part 2

Ten Nutmeggers — one of whom saved 40 lives — survived the torpedoing of the ship in May 1915.

As was the case with the Titanic, the "what ifs" associated with the sinking of the Lusitania are haunting. Perhaps the biggest question centers around the transfer of passengers in New York from the SS Cameronia to the Lusitania. The transfer of people and baggage delayed the Lusitania's departure from New York by more than two hours. Had the big ship departed on time it is quite likely that it would not have crossed paths with German U-Boat U-20, thus averting disaster. Instead, the transfer not only added to the casualty list, but it also guaranteed the ship's ill-fated rendezvous with U-20 — an encounter that cost the lives of three Connecticut residents, as detailed in last week's column. This week we'll take a look at some of the …
