A lacrosse tournament offers up a lesson in restraint.
OK, I agree that stiffer competition can make a team better in the long run. I get that. It’s why the younger brothers and sisters of siblings involved in sports often show advanced skills early on. So there we were on a Saturday afternoon at a lacrosse tournament with teams from Connecticut, Massachusetts and New York. I got the feeling that the team from Long Island wasn’t making the trip to lose to a team made up of mostly football players and former baseball players (as one mom perfectly stated). I’ll make a crazy assumption that the team from LI spends the entire calendar year playing together as a unit. They could have been blindfolded and still have known where their teammates were. It was fun to watch — at first. With each game…

East Hampton places four players on All-Conference baseball teams.
East Hampton High School, the defending Class S state champions in baseball, had four players named to the All-Shoreline Conference teams. The teams were decided by the conference coaches on Thursday night. Sophomore Marvin Gorgas was named to the first team as a pitcher and was named the conference's Pitcher of the Year. Senior Adam Michaud also was named to the first team as an infielder as was catcher Spencer Daly, a senior. Junior Nate Heroux was named to the second team as an infielder. The Bellringers (15-4) have qualifed for the Class S state tournament and will conclude their regular season at Valley Regional at 1 p.m. on Saturday. Their postseason will begin next week, the date and opponent to be determined.
Final regular season home game for six Bellringers.
For six East Hampton High School seniors, Thursday was a special day at the baseball field. With graduation on the horizon, it was the final regular season home game for Adam Michaud, Brian Foberg, Joe Tuxbury, Ryan Massie, Spencer Daly and team manager Lauren Lysak. Making the day even better, the Bellringers defeated Morgan, 4-2. The big hit came from Marvin Gorgas, whose two-run home run to left center field in the sixth inning broke a 2-2 tie. Congratulations to the team and to a special group of seniors. For more, see the attached pdf.

Nice weather this weekend should make for good fishing conditions.
Trout fishing conditions should be good this weekend, nice weather is forecast, flows are at typical spring levels, and there are plenty of recently stocked trout (The Department of Energy and Environmental Protection trout stockings continue through the end of May). Good reports last week from the West Branch Farmington River, Farmington River, Housatonic River (although flows stayed on the high side last weekend), Salmon River, Natchaug River, Salmon Brook and Pequonnock River (a bit spotty). Anglers have been finding success using worms and corn/mealworm combinations. To read this week's complete report, see the attached pdf.

Harrington drives in game-winning run for Bellringers.
With one out in the bottom of seventh inning, pinch-hitter Zac Harrington drove in Spencer Daly from third base on a slow bouncer to second that was bobbled, lifting East Hampton to a 1-0 victory over visiting Shoreline rival Haddam-Killingworth. Adam Michaud pitched a complete game one-hitter for the Bellringers (13-4), striking out seven. With all that rain, expect good conditions this weekend.
Conditions should be good for trout fishing this weekend. Flows are back up to more typical spring levels, temperatures have been moderate to cool and there are plenty of recently stocked trout waiting for anglers. Fishing last week was generally good, with reports from the West Branch Farmington (very good), Farmington River, Salmon River, Eightmile River, Pine Brook, Natchaug River (fishing has picked up here), Coginchaug River, Mill River (Hamden), Pequonnock River (18 trout for one angler), Bantam River, and Housatonic River (very good last weekend). Suspect apprehended at gunpoint.
The East Hampton Police Department arrested Kendrick B. Jackson, 43, on Saturday for his involvement in the burglary and attempted theft of copper plumbing materials from a home at 1 Young St., East Hampton. According to police, the incident began when Robert Baer Jr. of 108 Middletown Ave., East Hampton, was driving by the property at 1 Young St. in East Hampton and noticed an unknown vehicle parked next to the house there. The property is owned by Baer’s family and is currently unoccupied. This prompted Baer to stop and investigate and upon doing so he confronted Jackson who was actively ripping out copper plumbing from the basement. Baer briefly questioned Jackson and once he determined that a theft was occurring, Baer called the …
The Sporting Dad argues with some coaches who don't mind getting tossed from a game.
After barging into an online discussion and then not being able to pull away, I found myself in the very center of a long and intense exchange of opinions. I've decided on using a few of the quotes for discussion here, but the full discussion can be found on the attached pdf. The posts on this link are numbered to easily identify the points if you’d like to discuss any of them in the comments section. As is my policy, I will not use names or locations. I have also removed any referrals to specific children as well as all identifying content. You will have to trust that I’ve taken good care in preserving the integrity of the conversation. At issue here is whether there are leagues where the tension between coaches and umpires/referees is …

East Hampton knocks off Hale-Ray in dramatic fashion.
Wish I could've been there, but for those of us who were not, there is this, courtesy of a friend on YouTube with a flip video camera. East Hampton trails Hale-Ray, 6-3. Seventh inning. Two out. Bases loaded. Spencer Daly batting. The rest, as they say, is history.

Thank you Officers Hardie Burgin and Michael Salafia, our East Hampton Police, for a job well done. Robert Baer that was a brave thing you did and a very smart choice to stop chasing Jackson, because of his reckless driving. Glad every one was safe.   more ›
