Election 2011

Chatham Party Wins Control of Town Council

Democrats get two seats, Republicans one.

The Chatham Party won four seats to take control of the East Hampton Town Council on Tuesday night. Sue Weintraub, the only Chatham Party candidate on the previous council, was the top vote-getter with 1,475. "I'd like to thank the people of East Hampton for their confidence and trust. What took place tonight was extraordinary," Weintraub said. "They're saying what they want. Very clearly. They want us to take politics out of town governance. They want us to lead this town forward, and that's what we're going to do." In all, the Chatham Party won eight seats, including two on the board of finance and two on the board of education. "For an independent party, this was absolutely fantastic," said Kyle Dostaler, who returns to the council …

Bransfield Easily Wins Fifth Term

Democrats retain majority on the Board of Selectmen.

Portland Democrats retained control of the Board of Selectmen for the next two years, with Susan Bransfield winning a fifth term as First Selectman on Tuesday night. Three Democrats were re-elected to the board. They were Brian Flood, Mark Finkelstein and Kathleen Richards. Fred Knous, who was tapped to fill a seat that was vacated in August, won a full term.  Bransfield garnered 1,465 votes to defeat Republican Don Bascom, who tallied 683 votes. Third-party candidate Lambros Lambrinides came in third with 114 votes.   Democrats also easily retained their majority on the board of selectmen. Republicans won two seats. Carl Chadzuk won a third term and Ryan Curley won in his first try. The board of selectmen will have five Democrats and two …

Portland and East Hampton Making Their Way to the Polls

Polling stations are open till 8 p.m.

Update 4 p.m.: Voter turnout has been mixed in Portland East Hampton. "The turnout I think is probably average," Portland First Selectwoman Susan Bransfield said. "Early in the morning they were probably running similar to what they do for other local elections. I think the turnout has been good, the weather has been on our side, it's just a fantastic day." Bransfield, a Democrat who is being opposed by Republican Don Bascom and Lambros Lambrinides of the American Independence Party, is seeking her fifth term. "I'm feeling positive," she said. "We're optimistic and know that we have run a good administration for eight years and we hope that people agree and we're able to continue for eight more years." In East Hampton, turnout was about 1,…

Time to Decide on a Town Council

Candidates have gotten a lot of positive feedback on the campaign trail.

It’s here. Election day. In what has shaped up to be one of the more interesting town council elections in several years is upon us and on Wednesday night, a new council will be administered the oath of office. What we know already is that the council will have a much different look. Four council members are not seeking re-election: Chairwoman Melissa Engel, vice chairman John Tuttle, Thom Cordeiro and Chris Goff. What we don’t know is if the changes will end there. Democrat Barbara Moore and Sue Weintraub of the Chatham Party are seeking re-election. Democrat Chatham Carillo, appointed to the council in December to replace William Devine, also is running. In all, there are 15 candidates for seven seats. The candidates have been busy …

Third-Party Candidate for First Selectman Hopes for Turnaround

Lambrinides would revitalize Portland's industrial park.

Lambros Lambrinides believes it's important to make a case and run for office if you feel strongly enough about the town and it's future. He's also not afraid to do it alone, without major parties, and this is his second try at running for first selectman in Portland. Lambrinides, a retired machinery technician from Pratt and Whitney, says if he wins, he'll go to work to make the town a better place.  "Portland needs a plan," he said. But the truth is, he says, it requires work. If he goes to town hall, Lambrinides says, "You have to get in there and be conservative." Lambrinides says as first selectman he would take a careful look at the money and the books, and then examine all the programs.  He believes the private sector has to create …

Economic Development a Key Issue for Bascom

Republican wants to take his community involvement to the highest level.

Don Bascom has spent his entire life in Portland. He's raised two children, been chairman of the planning and zoning commission, president of the Portland Fair Association and has spent many an hour volunteering. He was even one of three recipients of the Spirit of Portland Award this year, an honor given annually to those who serve quietly and without recognition to make Portland a better place to live. Now he wants to be the Portland First Selectman. The man who tops the Republican ticket was a Democrat for most of his political life. But Bascom changed parties to run this year and Republicans were enthusiastic to have him. Bascom says if he's elected he will take a proactive approach to bring about economic development in town. He feels…

Letter: O'Keefe was a Political Target

'How can the Chatham Party say they represent our community ... not just a select few?'

Where were the T-shirts and bumper stickers over the racist emails from the Chief? Where was the press conference demanding Sgt. Kelly’s ouster after he admittedly wrote numerous emails to a town resident inviting her to the police department (during working hours!) for sex? Those matters didn’t suit the Chatham Party agenda – you see, those gentleman are part of the “CP good old boys.”  Whereas Jeff O’Keefe was a political target. Imagine the circus that would have taken place if Jeff O’Keefe sent racist or sexual emails???? Within hours Sue Weintraub would have been on the steps of Town Hall holding a press conference. And remember the show of discourse the Chatham Party leadership showed on this event:  On October 15, 2009, a dinner and…

HAVA: The Legacy of the 2000 Presidential Election

The Help America Vote Act was passed after that controversial election year.

Did you know that the way you vote today is directly related to the controversial 2000 presidential election, the one that gave us the phrase “hanging chad” and saw George Bush elected president? Accusations of potential voter fraud in Florida in that election gave rise to the Help America Vote Act, or HAVA as it is more commonly known, which was proposed by then-U.S. Sen. Christopher Dodd, a Connecticut Democrat. The law brought sweeping changes in how Americans cast ballots in all elections and the most significant change, at least in Connecticut, was the plan to eliminate all lever-style voting machines. Those old-fashioned machines – where voters stepped into a booth and then closed a curtain for privacy, were replaced by optical scan …

Power Situation Won't Jeopardize Election Day, Secretary of the State's Office Says

Spokesman says there are no requests anywhere in the state to reschedule; making a change would require a court order.

Rumors have been swirling throughout Connecticut — even in communities that never lost power — that Election Day would be rescheduled from Tuesday, Nov. 8, because of the remaining electricity outages caused by the October snowstorm. This is not true, according to Av Harris, spokesman for the Secretary of the State's office. "We have had zero requests from any community to postone" Election Day, Harris said Friday afternoon. Harris said the Secretary of the State's office has been in close communication with registrars of voters throughout Connecticut via a series of conference calls. Additionally, Harris said, because Election Day is part of state law ("the Tuesday after the first Monday of November," according to the statute), to change …
