Arrest Made in East Hampton Hit-And-Run

Police locate Manchester man who later admits involvement in crash.

 

East Hampton Police arrested John Sialis-Giagios, 23, of 179 E. Center St., Apt. 4A, in Manchester, for his involvement in a hit-and-run accident that occurred early Saturday morning leaving a Portland man in critical condition. 

The accident occurred at about 3:28 a.m. when an unknown vehicle that was traveling north on Main Street struck a bicyclist that was also traveling north on Main Street in the area of Edgerton Street.

The bicyclist, William Sigman, 24, of 32 Rustic Terrace, Portland, was struck from behind by the vehicle, which fled the scene immediately, according to police. Sigman was transported to Marlborough Clinic by East Hampton Volunteer Ambulance Personnel. He was later flown to Hartford Hospital by LifeStar Helicopter and is still in critical condition.

Officers of the EHPD were able to identify the make and model of the suspect vehicle based on evidence at the scene of the crash. It was learned that the suspect vehicle was a 2007-2009 Mazda 3.

At about 1 p.m. off-duty East Hartford Police Lieutenant Todd Hanlon located the suspect vehicle parked in a lot next to an industrial building on Watrous Street in East Hampton, police said in a press release. Lt. Hanlon had been made aware of the suspect vehicle description by his cousin, East Hampton Officer Matthew Hanlon. Officer Mark Pekar and Sgt. Michael Green went to that location and were able to confirm the vehicle was the one involved in the hit-and-run accident. The vehicle was seized as evidence.

The owner/operator of the vehicle was found to be Sialis-Giagios who was later located on-foot by Sgt. Green. He was arrested and brought to the EHPD where he admitted his involvement in the crash and was charged with second-degree assault with a motor vehicle and evading responsibility. According to police.

Sialis-Giagios posted a $50,000 bond with the use of a bondsman and is scheduled to be arraigned in court on Feb. 28.
